  1. どうぞ Douzo: please, kindly, by all meansDouzo might actually be the most common word you hear as a tourist in Japan. Seriously. It’s used in a wide variety of ways, but generally, it’s used as, “here you go”, or “please”. You’ll most likely hear this word in service interactions, such as as someone passes you a shopping bag or a train ticket. 2. どうもありがとうございました Doumo arigatou gozaimashita: thank you very much. You can shorten this down to “doumo” or “arigatou”. All together it sounds very formal, like you are extremely thankful. By using the individual words alone, it can sound a little more casual. The ending of the phrase should end in “mashita” as it conveys that are you thankful for what they have DONE for you already.  3. これは何ですか? kore wa nan desu ka?: what is x? This is super handy in a multitude of ways, for example – if you someone hands you a ticket and the entire thing is written in kanji. You can simply ask what is this? Or by pointing to an item on a menu that you can’t understand.  4. は どこ に あります か? X ha doko ni arimasu ka? You can just about pop anything into the spot for x. This sentence means “where is thereax” this can be used from a train station that you’re looking for, or a5. すみません Sumimasen: excuse me Sumimasen means “excuse me, pardon me”, and with the completely mind-blowing amount of people in Japan, and especially in Tokyo, it’s nearly impossible not to walk into another person. Unless of course, you’re a Japanese person and you’ve got the streamlined walking down-pat. If you’re like me, and a giant bumbling foreigner though, you’ll most likely have to say “excuse me/pardon me” at least one.  6. こんにちは Konnichi wa: hello Nothing too crazy. It simply means hello. It’s great! We also have おはよう(ohayou) for good morning, and こんばんは (konban wa) for good evening.  7. Xをください X o kudasai: x please? Kudasai means please, and you can use...

So, you’ve poured over some reading materials in your chosen language, you’ve written until your hands hurt, and you’ve watched a stack of foreign movies. Now you’re stopping in the street after over-hearing a stranger speaking Italian, wondering if it would be weird to stop and chat with them.In order to stop you from pestering strangers, we compiled a list of ways to practice speaking that we used in our learning experience.  Ask yourself “why” questions. “Why do I study this language?” “Why do I like avocado on toast?” “Why am I asking these questions?!” The reason these works so well? It’s simply because you’re going to be answering questions with personal, in-depth, and real answers. You’re going to be forcing yourself to answer questions that you might be faced with in real life. The weirder the better- practice answering the question “why”, and you’ll be prepared for any questions you might get asked. Use online resources for meeting people. No- we aren’t talking about popular apps like the one starting with a “t” and ending with “inder’. Specifically, we mean apps that specialize in connecting language learning for the purpose of practice. We love “hello-talk”. They are mostly free to sign up, and they connect you with people all over the world who want to practice and show off their new-found language skills. Head to a cultural restaurant This is the place to practice ordering in your new language. Who knows? You might even end up in a fascinating conversation with the wait staff. and if you fail miserably- in the worst-case scenario, you know that the wait staff can still speak English, and you get to emerge yourself in the culture with a plate of pasta! Attend Acquire Language’s cultural events. Come along to our open events- with a completely different one hosted every fortnight, we provide the space for like-mindedt likeminded individuals who are experiencing the same difficulties and wins that you are...

The Start Of Something Incredible   "How did Acquire Language Come About?"  Good question. Circa 2017,  a group of avid language tutors came together over a very millennial avo and toast to discuss the lack of available language learning resources in Brisbane. After spending over a decade each cultivating their languages and involving themselves in various parts of the Brisbane community, they were hearing the same thing over and over again. We – Brisbanites – wanted to use our language. We wanted to talk, to mingle, and we wanted to meet like-minded people. Our team realised that language learning is all about communication, after all, the entire purpose of learning a language is to be communicating with new people, near and far.So, we asked ourselves, why does it have to be so difficult? Why are language fanatics Brisbane-wide hiding behind textbooks, struggling through boring night classes, and going through the whole tricky process completely alone?Acquire Language was, therefore, the love child of everything that could have made the process easier for our own learning. We teamed together dedicated support and extensive training. That's how we are truly capable of proving the best possible education. With each and every “ah, wouldn’t that have been fantastic?” we committed ourselves to provide it the exact way we had wanted. We took our on-the-ground teaching experience and our own trials and tribulations of the learning experience, and with one clear goal in mind: “make language learning simple”, we created something incredible. Two years of creative thinking, planning, building, and late-night brainstorming later, we bring to you: Acquire Language. As part of our vision, we have created Brisbane’s only language community. Each week, we offer; • In-Home Language tuition Brought directly to your door. We don't want to create hassle. Can't find parking? No problems - we'll come to you! Don't wait to get out of your pyjamas? No problems - we'll come to you! Wan't to stay curled up on the couch with a hot chocolate while...
